None of us have it all worked out!
I've been in situations where I've felt like the person leading a course, a manager at work, some amazing training or a friend I've seen, or retreat leader etc seemed so wise, so learned & so calm, that in my earlier years this would convince me they had perfect lives. I can honestly say I don't think this is ever the case.
I don't think anyone has it all worked out. I think we all have somewhere in our lives where we sense a shortfall or an overwhelm or that awful word...feel a failure in some way, or another terrible word...a burden.
I believe & I have seen & experienced myself, that you can do every single healthy thing possible in your life - emotionally, spiritually (& by that I mean doing things good for your soul, to feed your personal spirit, things that make you you & bring you joy) & physically and still not feel great.
It's how life is some times. And it's okay to not be okay.
We were not designed to be 'go go go' all the time. We are no longer in tune with the seasons or daylight & darkness. We know the beauty & the drawbacks of everything being available 24/7 - TV, food deliveries, social media.
And work, our working patterns are hugely important & effect everything - our sleep, our relationships, our ability to pursue hobbies, our self worth, our energy & drive.
I think that's why we can sometimes think we're doing it all right but still have "wobbles". We can be our own harshest critic at times. But actually we are human beings not human doings!
A lot of mental health and emotional wellbeing work is reminders - it really is often stuff we already know that helps us, but we can lose sight of it due to time factors, energy factors, logistics or just forgetting & getting immersed in the daily grind.
"Oh yeah I used to" [... insert hobby/sport/social activity/craft/journal...] here.
What we can do is be kinder to ourselves & more patient.
And we need different coping tools at different times in our lives. So we build toolkits. And sometimes we forget or literally have absolutely no time whatsoever & we don't get any of those tools out, or not enough of them.
And it is all okay. We can get back on the horse, we can start building new habits or recommence them. And even reading this is you getting ready to do that. You've come across this page for a reason.
And vitally we can also ask for help.
The very act of asking for help is often what we forget to do.
The wellbeing industry has hugely increased lately & it is needed.
I have my own thoughts on what I feel is sometimes the misuse of basic self care being sold as "good for your mental health". I like getting my nails done occasionally but it isn't actually a mental health tool.
I do know doing little things for ourselves can boost our self worth & carving out time for ourselves is crucial.
And looking after our emotional wellbeing should be embedded in our routines as much as brushing our teeth is.
